Boy Meets Girl - Waiting for a Star to Fall

It's a song that makes me smile whenever I hear it. It is pure 80s pop at its finest.

"Waiting for a Star to Fall" was inspired by a real-life moment when George Merrill saw a falling star at a Whitney Houston concert, where he and Shannon Rubicam worked as songwriters. Originally written for Houston, the song was rejected by her team. It was later recorded by Boy Meets Girl, the duo of Merrill and Rubicam, and became their biggest hit.

The song hit #5 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the AC Chart. George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam wrote some big hits back in the day, including Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Love Me)." The duo was married but later divorced.

You can always hear fun songs like these on The Variety Station.
