Goo Goo Dolls - Name

I remember playing "We Are the Normal" on WXLC back in the day. The song was obscure, and I never understood why a Top 40 station was playing it. The track was not even a Top 100 hit. Don't get me wrong, I like the song but never heard anyone else playing it. Flash forward to 1995, the band's fifth studio release, "A Boy Named Goo," and today's Song of the Day, "Name."

"Name" was a #5 hit on the Hot 100 and propelled the band into a mainstream pop-rock band. The album produced two other singles, "Naked" and "Long Way Down," but went nowhere on the charts. "Name" is a beautifully crafted song with an amazing acoustic melody and deep emotional lyrics. It is no wonder the song was a major hit. The track deals with one trying to find a place in this world. The song spoke to me as I realized my lifelong dream of being a Radio DJ was probably not a good career move, and a relationship had fallen apart. I was looking for my "Name." I still think weeks from turning 52 that I am still looking for my "Name."

Goo Goo Dolls would score major success with their next album, and I know one day I will cover the legendary "Iris."
